We believe that ministry is for people of all ages. At Zion, we have a number of great ways for your child to learn and grow in their faith. From the Day Off Program, to FootPrints, Youth Group, Confirmation class, and those Wednesday Night gatherings in Advent and Lent for children, we are committed to doing this work.

The ability to have Alix at Zion is a result of a partnership with Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Frederick. While she will not be at Zion every week, we look forward to this partnership and being able to have a very qualified individual lead our children, youth and family ministries.
Alix Albright
Hi! I'm Alexandra "Alix" Albright, and I'm excited to be serving as the Joint Youth and Family Director at Zion Lutheran Church and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Before stepping into youth ministry, I spent five wonderful years as an elementary school teacher at St. Thomas More Academy. While I loved being in the classroom, I'm grateful for this new opportunity to walk alongside young people in their faith.
One of the things that makes this role especially meaningful is that I have the
opportunity to serve the very communities that once poured into me as a youth. The encouragement, friendships, and faith I experienced helped shape who I am today, and it's a true blessing to now give back in the same way.
I earned my Bachelor of Applied Science from UNC Greensboro and my Master of Arts in Teaching from Mount St. Mary's University. My background in education has given me a passion for helping young people learn, grow, and discover the unique gifts God has given them.
Outside of church, I enjoy traveling to new places, getting lost in a good book, trying new recipes in the kitchen, and spending as much time as I can doting on my niece. I'm looking forward to getting to know the youth and families of both congregations and growing together in faith and fellowship.

We are making some changes to our Confirmation program this year in order to better meet the needs of our confirmands.
-
Instead of holding Confirmation once a month, we have moved it to Sunday mornings at 10 a.m. so that families do not have to rush back in the evening for class. Classes will last less than an hour to better accommodate the attention spans of middle and high school students.
-
While we would love for confirmands to attend class each week, we understand that life can sometimes get in the way. Therefore, we ask that confirmands attend a minimum of twice a month.
-
We are asking each parent to sign up for one week as a chaperone. That parent will be responsible for bringing the second breakfast and serving as the second adult in the classroom.
-
We are asking each confirmand to participate in the life of the church. We will talk with the confirmands to discover where their individual gifts and talents lie. Some ideas include:
-
Reading Lessons
-
Assisting Minister
-
Acolyte
-
Altar Guild
-
Music (Playing/Singing)
-
Tech
-
-
We will be meeting downstairs in the Youth Room. This is a more intimate environment that will be more conducive to conversation and relationship building.
-
Because of the room change, we will not be able to offer Zoom participation. If you can't make it one week, don't worry! Participating in person is more important.
-
We are going to add service projects as part of the curriculum. We will talk more about this at the beginning of the year.
-
We are bringing back Worship Notes! We are asking confirmands to complete the worship notes twice a month.
-
The cost of the books and Bible is $90 per student. The church will cover the initial cost, but if books or Bibles are lost, parents will be responsible for reimbursing the church for their replacement.
-
We are asking that confirmands and their parents attend the first class together so that we can go over our new approach.
-
Our Confirmation Class is not just for those who have not yet been confirmed; it is also for those who have already been confirmed. We have changed some of our modules to include topics and material that we have not taught before. We hope this Confirmation Class can become a class for all middle and high school students. Those who have already been confirmed can serve as mentors while continuing to learn themselves. Catechetical studies are not “one and done”; they are meant to be revisited over and over again. We hope that by the time a student graduates from high school, they will have a strong grounding in the basics of Christianity and Lutheran theology. Classes will be designed to accommodate both students who have completed Confirmation and those who are still in the process.

Our First Gathering is September 6 at 4 p.m.. We are keeping it light by grabbing Ice Cream at Nutter's with our new director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministries - Alix! Kids are welcome to bring friends along with them. All we ask is that everyone fill out a permission slip before we leave. And the church is covering the cost of the Ice Cream.
