Venture Crew 121
A conversation with Zion’s Venture Crew 121 President, Josh Glessner:
Q: Why did you join Venture Crew 121?
A: I joined because Venturing emphasizes “high adventure” activities
like camping, canoeing, rock climbing, skiing and white water rafting.
Also, Venturing emphasizes leadership as we (the kids) are the ones who help
plan the events – a great resume builder for those thinking about college.
Q: What is it like being president?
A: Our crew was just formed a month or so ago so being the first president has been really busy.
Luckily, we have a great advisor, Rick Rogers. We had a planning meeting with all the officers
in February and set a pretty aggressive activity schedule. We have something planned for every
month. I have to help make sure whoever is planning the event communicates with the whole crew,
either by email or by phone or text. If Rick (our advisor) has things he needs done, he can text
me and I can get the word out.
Q: What would you tell someone who isn’t sure whether Venturing is for them?
A:If you like to be outdoors and like to keep active, I think you would definitely find activities you
would like. My brother is going on an event in April that includes camping, various types of shooting
(rifle, shotgun etc.), archery, tomahawk throwing, kayaking and canoeing… and ends with a huge
catapult contest. The weekend also includes a big themed feast and party. You might think all this
is expensive, but by using Boy Scout facilities, a weekend like this only costs around $45. Everyone
should at least add their name to our email list to find out what activities are coming up and try them!
Venturing is a co-ed high adventure program for young men and women ages 14 to 21
(Venturing is part of the Boy Scouts of America.) Zion’s crew is open to everyone in the
community, so invite your friends to join! If you are interested in finding out more about joining
Crew 121, contact Rick Rogers at 240-535-2064. We will honor Venture Crew 121 members at the
Charter Ceremony at Zion on Sunday, April 18, at the 10:45am service.
